Tax return 2022: Looking to claim work-from-home expenses? Here’s what you need to know – 7NEWS

Tax time is coming up, which means most Aussies will be looking to make the most of claiming work-related expenses.

But with many people having worked from home for a large portion of the last financial year, employees will be tempted to claim expenses that might just cross a line for the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

Tax expert Elinor Kasapidis said tax agents would weed out invalid claims, but could also help you find other expenses you are allowed to claim.

“When it comes to claiming deductions, if you think it’s a ‘yeah, nah’ situation, the answer is probably ‘nah’,” she said.

“If you’re still keen to argue the point after applying a ‘yeah, nah’ approach, I recommend you run it past your tax agent before putting your head in the lion’s mouth by lodging your return.

“A CPA Australia tax agent will weed out claims which aren’t legit, and probably find some deductions you are entitled to but weren’t aware of.

“Accountants don’t want to be the fun police, quite the opposite.

“They’re trying to stop you getting on the wrong side of the ATO, and make sure you get your maximum refund.”

What you can’t claim on your tax return

Kasapidis said there are some claims simply won’t be accepted by the ATO, including attempting to claim the cost of doggie day care.

“You went back to the office and Rover destroyed the couch, so now he’s in doggie day care. Yes, we saw the Instagram post; no, the cost can’t be deducted,” she said.

Other work-from-home-related expenses that can’t be claimed include a working-from-home wardrobe, home decor to spice up your Zoom call background and snacks.

“Sometimes we all need a Tim Tam or 12 to get through the workday,” Kasapidis said.
