Whether it’s a whole room or just a corner of it, carving out a designated area for work is key. “Find ways to close up shop for the day and separate your ‘work’ and ‘home’ life. I suggest storing your computer, notebook and pens in a basket every evening so that you can keep things organized and your space clutter-free,” says Ariel Kaye, founder of Parachute. “I like to use baskets and bins throughout my house for general organization.”

Think Outside The File Cabinet

Sure you can opt for standard storage pieces, but there are also more creative ways to store items and keep clutter at bay. If your work is primarily done online instead of on paper, you can forgo a file cabinet and keep supplies in a rolling cart like this one. “A rolling cart is a home office’s best friend. You can store everything from cords, A/V equipment, books, reference materials and office supplies neatly on the shelves—and it’s a breeze to pack it up and wheel it out of sight when the work day is done,” says Gill.
